YOKOHAMA ARCHIVES OF HISTORY Owning
In the Edo period, this area was called Motomura, and villagers lived by farming and fishery. Signing of Japan-U.S. Treaty of Amity opened the port of Yokohama, and Westerners residences were set in the area presently Yamashitacho. The villagers were forced to move to the hillside and this new area being the Original Yokohama, was named Motomura (original village) and later Motomachi, as it is known now.
